The Greatest Angioplasty Mix You Ever Will Hear

You want commitment? i'll give you fucking commitment.

Who here had an angioplasty earlier today, raise your hands? Just me? Well then.

Actually not the biggest of deals, it was just a maintenance thing from my earlier cyborg implant. Without going into too much gross detail, because of the artery that needed the ballooning, they went in through the groin with the tube. i realized after the fact that the male nurse gave me a landing strip (or manding strip, if you will). Am i a nurse bitch now? Anyone? Help? Please?

Free Music Friday: The Elephantine, Gone, Upbeat, Scorching, Significant Other, Euro, Bright, Denim, Jem Version

It would appear that damn near every other blog out there (and a lot of bands, magazines, radio stations, sex clubs, etc.) is putting out some sort of 4th of July Mix, so i guess i better getting hopping on working one up for LET. In the interim, i guess you'll just have to make due with a bunch of free mp3s sans a theme.

First up, a track from the Bleep X Sonar 2010 sampler. They posted a bunch of tracks from bands playing some Euro fest i've never heard of, but am jealous that i'm not attending all the same. Broadcast is included in that mix, and i've dug them for a while. To use the vernacular, i'd categorize this as some laid back chillwave, but that's just because i want LET to start showing up when people Google "chillwave." A blog cannot live on being a top Google result for "Jilling Off" alone, folks.

You know i'm a sucker for beat producers, electronic music seducers and DJ droopers (fuck you, i needed a rhyme), and the cat from NickNack obviously realized the same when they sent us their latest. This cat has skills, establishing a funky, spooky vibe while intermittently cutting it up. i say go for it.

mp3: Strangest Secret (NickNack from Dearly Departed)

For those bummed out by the Eels' last CD, it sounds like the last in his self-described trilogy, Tomorrow Morning (along with End Times and Hombre Lobo), appears to be a step in the uplifting direction. First single "Looking Up" has a church gospel feel, and the title kind of sums up the sentiment. For a guy's who previously wrote one of the most cheerful song ever about hating people (I'm looking at you, "I Like Birds"), this one definitely should give pause to those who have complained that Mr. E has been a bit too morose of late. A man with a beard of that magnitude, however, never should be doubted.

mp3: Looking Up (Eels from Tomorrow Morning)

The folks at Aquarium Drunkard just dropped their second annual LA artist mix. The conceit is for local LA artists to cover a famous album of the past. Last year, it was Paul McCartney's RAM, this year it's Television’s sophomore LP, Adventure. Truth be told, i can do without most of the tracks here, but the Imaad Wasif/Lykke Li take on "The Fire" is an absolute beast, some of Wasif's best axe work on wax, as far as i'm concerned. Li really is just a back-up voice on this one, but who doesn't love Lykke Li? Nobody. Not even your grandfather. And if you say otherwise, well, we're going to have words, buddy.

In an apparent effort to take the title of reigning queen of the revitalized beach girl rock sound, Best Coast has dropped another single from their soon-to-drop Crazy for You. And you know what? That crown is hers, as far as i'm concerned. While not quite as devilishly addictive as "When I'm With You," it's a damn fine follow-up, nonetheless.

mp3: Boyfriend (Best Coast from Crazy for You)

Swedish popsters Sambassadeur just dropped the latest single from their third LP, European. Another dreamy, blissful track from our neighbors to the Northeast-ish. Damnation, i lurvs me some Scandinavians. Here's another reason why.

mp3: I Can Try (Sambassadeur from European)

It's funny, i've never been much of a Black Moth Super Rainbow fan, but the latest solo efforts from Tobacco and now Dreamend are two of my fave CDs this year. Whereas Tobacco's latest is kind of in-your-face, Dreamend's debut clearly is the more laid back of the two. If you're a fan of Megafaun, you're going to dig this.

Taking notes from sometime bandmate Jack White, Alison Mosshart is back at it with Jamie "Hotel" Hince and the Kills. They just did a Levi's Pioneer Session (No shit, Chet. No shit) and dropped this stellar cover of the Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes." It's a good 'un, that's fo' sho'.

And to close things out, the second single from Fol Chen's Part II: The New December. i can't quite put my finger on why, but i'm digging these cats more and more with each new track i hear. This one does nothing to change that sentiment.

Now go get your holiday weekend started, assuming you're living Stateside. And be careful with those fireworks. No reason for anyone to go shooting their eye out or anything drastic like that.

The Greatest, Shortest Ticket Scalper Mix You Ever Will Hear

Man alive, going to see the Blackhawks play in the home opener is not looking to be an easy deal. It would be nice if Ticket Bastard and the NHL could get their shit together enough to make an official announcement about when tickets go on-sale. Or has the time already come and gone? You can't tell from either of their websites. Should i risk it and hope a scalper makes my day? i need music for these types of decisions.

As such, here's The Greatest, Shortest Ticket Scalper Mix You Ever Will Hear.

The Greatest Mixtape For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge You Will Ever Hear

This was going to be my birthday post, but then that damn blizzard hit, fucking up my entire schedule. Oh well, i made it to the Caps and the comic book store this past Friday, so the day wasn't an entire waste. For those of you that feel bad for me, go buy me this in honor of this post.

Today we're going to take a listen to a bunch of fucking tracks. i forget exactly from whose lips i first heard it, but it's amazing that the word for making love, arguably one of the highlights of being alive, also is the exact same word we use when we want to hurt someone terribly or show extreme displeasure. Thankfully, no one has ever said to me, "fuck you, that was the worst fucking fuck i've ever fucking had to fucking endure*," but such a sentence does begin to show just some of the many uses of every one's favorite F word.

i'm so interested in the art of words that i even recently bought The F Word. Actually, i bought it for someone else, but i plan on borrowing it back shortly. And let's face it, fuck is a good word. Sounds like the noise a racquetball makes when you throw it against the wall. Starts with a nice, soft "f" before slapping you with its "uck" at the end there. Is there anything that word can't do? Not that i'm fucking aware of, Fucko.

On The Soap Box

(Ed. Note: We normally steer clear of anything political 'round these parts. Personally, i think they're all in cahoots, towards whichever side of the pendulum they claim to swing. i received a message earlier today from the 9:30 Club, though, that most likely impacts nearly all LET readers--the proposed merger between Ticket Master and Live Nation. Since they've gone to all the trouble of taking legitimate steps towards making sure this doesn't happen, i'll leave it to those hep cats to explain. Final word--i wrote and sent the proposed email suggested below. If you're tired of getting charged exorbitant fees to hear live music, you should do the same.)

Concert Fans Beware!

There’s a train wreck about to happen and consumer groups say YOU will be the victim if the two most powerful corporate interests in the live concert business get their way. But you can help stop the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The government needs to hear from music fans now. Tell the Department of Justice that you’re against these monopolies amassing illegal power over consumers, before it’s too late.

As a concertgoer you have already felt the pain, and if Ticketmaster and Live Nation get their way, it’ll get worse. In the last 12 years, since Live Nation and its predecessor started its widespread takeover of the concert industry, concert ticket prices have shot up 82% while the consumer price index has gone up just 17%*. We are concerned that if the two concert industry behemoths, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, are permitted to merge, the variety and quality of artists coming to local venues will be affected, and your costs could rise further and faster.
Five of the nation’s most prominent public interest groups called on the Department of Justice to block the proposed merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation:

“Consumers deserve a fair deal in the entertainment marketplace, not the fewer choices and higher prices that would result from this merger,” said Susan Grant, Director of Consumer Protection at Consumer Federation of America

“This merger is an insult to both musicians and consumers,” said James Love, Director of Knowledge Ecology International
“We cannot envision a remedy that would ease this chilling impediment to competition… In the absence of other effective, expeditious remedies, the proposed transaction should be prohibited.” American Antitrust Institute White Paper
As described by Senator Herb Kohl (WI) in the House Antitrust hearing, “This merger will not only expand Ticketmaster’s control of the ticketing market by eliminating a competitor, but it is also creating an entity that will control the entire chain of the concert business – from artist management to concert promotion and production to ticketing and ticket resale.”

“This merger would be a disaster for consumers. Nothing short of blocking this takeover of the ticket market by two industry behemoths will be acceptable,” said National Consumers League Executive Director Sally Greenberg.

“As president, I will direct my administration to reinvigorate antitrust enforcement. I will step up review of merger activity and take effective action to stop or restructure those mergers that are likely to harm consumer welfare…,” said Senator Barack Obama when he was campaigning for the presidency.

If you agree with the consumer groups and lawmakers, make a difference and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD NOW.

Send a message to the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice telling them you support President Obama’s campaign promise to protect the American public from abusive monopolies.

Live Review: The Kills @ Black Cat, May 2

The Kills blew into town this past weekend for I believe their second ever gig at the Black Cat (at least, it was my second time seeing them there), and I have to say, they've greatly improved their stage presence from that first time a few years back. Alison "VV" Mosshart and Jamie "Hotel" Hince have come a long way since then, really learning how to own the stage and make their presence felt. They gyrated, grinded and went through most of the other necessary punk posturing that the crowd seemed to love, at least at first (more on that later).

While I was ever so slightly miffed that the show started a half hour later than the Cat claimed it would, once those two ragamuffins took the stage, all was forgiven. Performing against a backdrop of simply weird videos, they kicked off the show with their latest single, URA Fever, from the new album, Midnight Boom. They played liberally from all three of their ablums, but the audience obviously was happiest when tunes from their debut, Keep On Your Mean Side, were played. I'd wager "Kissy Kissy" was the crowd favorite, though "Fried My Little Brain" seemed a close second.

The show seemed overly long to the audience, however, as there was a noticeable filtering towards the door as the evening waned. Perhaps the overwhelming guitar pyrotechnics wore thin on some folks. It's funny, Hotel took time to tune his guitar between each song, which seemed somewhat pointless, as his finger work seemed intent on banging and shredding, not playing anything resembling scales or the like. It also would have been nice for a bit of audience interaction, particularly with the frequent pauses between songs. While there were a few "thank yous" here and there, the only true audience interaction occurred near the very end of the set when Hince commented on people not being allowed to smoke and do other bad things in bars anymore.

Two other things I'd like to comment upon before I close. When the hell did 80s fashion make such a strong come back? Well over half the audience looked like they had raided my high school class' wardrobes. As someone who lived through the era, kids, please, that stuff looked like shit back then. Do us all a favor and let it stay dead. Those really ugly, grand dad, striped hats should not only be burned, but the folks that wear them probably need to be slapped, too. I'm just looking out for you people here. Also, and I say this in all honesty, the opening act may well have been the worst band I've ever seen in my life. I'll admit, I (fortunately) only saw the last couple of songs and not the whole set, but Sweet Jebus, they sucked on ice. Playing some form of wanna-be Nouveau New Wave, they were just bad, plain and simple. I've erased their name from my memory, so you'll have to do some web detective work on your own if you're that interested. This is particulary disheartening in light of the fact that the Kills' last opener was Scout Niblett and she pretty much rocks my world.

Oh well, there's always the next tour, I suppose.
