Post Xmas Sale: Even FREEER Free Music!!!

Uf dah, kids. Uf dah.

Did you delight in gluttonous revelry more appropriate to Bacchus than any Christian deity? Yeah, me, too.

Just like the chain stores, here at LET today (and possibly the next couple to follow; still have to do some inbox spelunking), we're running a "We Still Have More Xmas Crap to Get Rid Of" Sale! Today's free mp3s are even FREEER!!!

First up, something from the Genuisis, a new project comprised of Kimya Dawson, Aesop Rock, Johnny Druelinger (Tin Tree Factory), Jason Carmer & Quinn Tuffinuff. While i'm still checking it out myself, with a line-up like that, it's got to be good, right? If it isn't, blame Frank Shirley.

And a happy belated birthday, Baby Jesus! We miss you, too, Big Baby Jesus.

Deck Them Halls and Fa La La La La

Just a few more days to finish up that Xmas shopping, kids. i've been done for a while myself, that is, until i just learned that one of my brothers is bringing his girlfriend to the family festivities. Good thing i've got some more of this soon-to-be-done-with Xmas music to get me through the mall without murdering anyone.

Brendan Benson is not chincy with his holiday cheer. Not only did he share the holiday spirit with us, he wants to share it with you, too, on this acoustic rocker from the wonderful Holiday Undercover series.

You know you're going to see this track again come Halloween, but it's intended for this holiday, so here we go. If your idea of a thumping good time is a dubstep beat peppered with Christian zealot ravings, have i got a track for you!

Wanna know how those OFWGKTA kids feel about Xmas? OK. If you thought it included butt fucking Yoda, well, you'd actually be right.

That enough Xmas music for you for now? Good.

A Mixed Bag of Hodge Podge Audio Goodness

Most of the time, i try to come up with some random, loose thread to connect the various tunes i talk about in a given post. Other times, i just happen to have a bunch of good shit that i feel like sharing. Guess what kind of day today is?

While i'm even more impressed by her business acumen and ability to actually make Twitter pay off, Amanda Fucking Palmer still is one hell of a songstress. The fact that she's happy to get nekkid apparently at the drop of a hat doesn't hurt my opinion of her, but i think i'm getting off-track here. Her new Band Camp single is a bit poppier than a lot of her stuff, but it's utterly danceable at the same time, so what more do you want? If you're so inclined, Ms. Palmer has a "pay what you want" drill going on at the page, so...

LET's favorite Lord of the Loop, Pogo, has put together a rather pretty, though somber, tune that appears to have resulted from a recent break-up. Hate to see anyone hurting, but at least his art hasn't suffered.

If i haven't made this abundantly clear, two things are going to pretty much seal the deal in terms of me posting your music here at LET. Send me either: 1. Nudes of your ex-girlfriend. 2. Rap songs about comic books. Guess which route K-murdock, Random aka Mega Ran and Storyville took?

You freaks seem to be digging the beat Xmas tunes in a big way, so have at it. Paul White reworks the classic, AND throws in some Grinch at the tail end just 'cuz.

Since we're talking beats, just another little something from Ernest Gonzales. Why? Because we love him, that's why.

And last, but most certainly not least, i've been meaning forever and a day to throw a major shout out to Highly Rec'd. Each month, Jon over there puts together a stellar mixtape that's sent directly to your inbox (not that this is done so that he can send you the hottest tracks today without all that legal hassling or anything.) LET highly recommends Higly Rec'd. Sign up here. 'Nuff said.

It's Covered: It's Beginning to Sound Too Much Like Xmas

i'm relatively positive there's a whole covered/wrapped/wrapping paper joke i should be making, but quite frankly, i've been so swamped 'round here lately, i just don't have time to think of what that line is. That being said, ain't no Scrooges at LET during the holidays, so let's delve into some tasty Christmas covers, shall we?

Now, if this first one wasn't listed as part of the A.V. Club's Holiday Undercover Series, i don't know if i'd even think of it as a Christmas song. i mean, let's be honest, this is the Vacation song, pure and simple, but who am i to argue with the Walkmen? Hell, they even wore Santa hats for the video, so clearly i am in the wrong. Except i'm not, but Xmas is a time for acceptance, right? So there you have it.

Quite possibly my most favoritest holiday classic penned in the 80s, Summer Camp does a pretty faithful cover of the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping." Much like TNT's 24-hour Christmas Story marathon, this one is a comfy fit for the holidays.

You Want More Xmas Music?

OK, kids, i only have a few minutes before i have to be somewhere for work, but this damn blogging thing is an addiction.

Since all y'all seem to have been lapping up all the holiday tunes, far be it from me to deny you the latest. For your listening pleasure, this Christmas number from none other than indie rocker stalwarts Los Campesinos! i don't know about you, but it's the ! that really does it for me. The track drops as a 7″ in the band’s new quarterly zine, Heat Rash. Thanks to Stereogum for the good looking out for you seasonal music junkies.

Beat Meet: A Charlie Brown Christmas Edition

So The Missus has undertaken the Xmas decorating at Chez Terrible, and we've got one of my "non-traditional" holiday mixes on ye olde iPod docking station. Whilst listening, i just realized i've got a couple of beats sampling A Charlie Brown Christmas, thereby providing a perfect way to launch the holiday season 'round these parts AND furthering my promise to make LET the world's premier source of beat music of a questionably legal nature sampling your favorite kiddie shows of yesterday. 'Tis truly the most magical time of year. Black Dynamite bless us, everyone!

Ho, ho, ho, you ho, ho, hos!

Xmas Gift Guide 2009: Light in the Attic Vinyl Subscription

Hello dear sirs and madames. Contrary to popular opinion, I have not fallen off the face of the Earth, though it certainly does feel that way. My dearest partner has been writing up a storm, so I thought it time to show my face around these parts for the first time in quite some time. I've been up to no good as usual, and there will be a fairly big announcement coming soon. But in the meantime, it's time to indulge in a little pre-holiday wish-listing.

Over the past year and a half or so, I've become moderately obsessed with vinyl. Most of my collection is of the used (and $1 variety, from Plan 9) ilk, but I certainly do enjoy hearing that modern music on the record player. This particular wish list item would be great for yours truly, or any other vinyl-hoarder you happen to know and love. Our dear, darling friends at Light in the Attic have put together another wonderful, tempting subscription service, much like the one they did last year (including Serge Gainsbourg and Karen Dalton to name just a couple). For the sum of $130 US dollars (slightly higher for you Canucks and other international sorts), you will be subscribed to a year-long feast of vinyl delights. Among the offerings for 2010 is the oh-so-scandalous Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin opus J'Taime/Moi Non Plus, and the fun doesn't stop there.

Read all about it and get your subscriptions here. And if vinyl doesn't float your boat, the subscription is also available in CD and digital formats. Hurrah!

Video Vixens: Feliz Navidad Edition

Rather unbelievable, isn't it, to think that another Xmas is just about upon us. When I was growing up, there were few things I looked forward to more than a White Christmas. As a little pigtailed scamp, Christmastime always seemed so magical, what with the festively-decorated tree and the twinkling lights and the stockings. I always made sure to leave a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for one S. Claus, too.

These days, I think that a White Christmas is prettier in pictures than in practice (seeing as how I now drive to the old homestead for the holidays), and I know the rather deflating truth about Santa. But there's still something special about holiday music. So, while I've been at home in bed for the past few days (no, not for fun reasons, but because I've been cursed with some sort of plague), I've rounded up some of my all-time faves, and some new favorites, too.

We begin with the somewhat cheesy but totally fabulous
David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet on "Little Drummer Boy". It's the meeting of two different styles, and it never ceases to be great. Next up, an even older classic, the purrfect Eartha Kitt lending her feline vocals to "Santa Baby". It's the ultimate in materialistic holiday songs (and so appropriate for the greedy times in which we live). Then it's on to something new, with the Raveonettes' haunting "Christmas Song". We sure are suckers for that Danish duo around these parts. And really, nothing says Christmas like Glam Rock, so I'm throwing in a little Slade with "Merry Christmas Everybody". I always felt Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" was one of the best Xmas songs ever recorded, and so he is included here. Hope you get a kick outta the videos.
