Quote of the Day: #3

ou probably know by now that Oasis has split...yet again. Once again it was some serious in-fighting betwixt the brothers Gallagher that did the band in, though I'm in the camp that couldn't actually believe they were still together. Mind you, Noel Gallagher did know his way around a good pop song, and I'd still vote "Wonderwall" as one of the finest songs of the 90s, if not of, well, ever. Yes, I said it, and I stand by it.

In any event, the NME website has collected 50 Noel Gallagher quotes, along with some great photos, and made a wee feature out of it. The quotes themselves are, as always, priceless, though I certainly did get a kick out of seeing that 1996 photo of Noel hanging out with a peroxided Robbie Williams.

This quote selection, given the circumstances between the recent, and evidently final, Oasis split, seems rather apros pos, as it's Noel discussing the downside of his dear brother Liam:

"He's rude, arrogant, intimidating and lazy. He's the angriest man you'll ever meet. He's like a man with a fork in a world of soup."

And in honor of the split, here's some "Wonderwall" for your enjoyment.

Quote of the Day: #2

hen I was a wee lass of 16, Oasis at George Mason University's Patriot Center was my first ever live concert experience. As an impressionable teenager I had fallen head over everything for the Gallagher brothers, not only for their music, but their, well, antics. I loved hearing them fight ("Wibbling Rivalry, anyone?), I loved reading in Q or Select or Mojo their latest, oft-nonsensical quotes. I also had quite the crush on Liam Gallagher, for a year or two.

Eventually, my Oasis-centric phase subsided (pretty much after the release of their third album, which the critics gave a hard time, but I think is actually a rather good album). I moved on to many other bands, became enamored with many more musicians. But looking back through my collection of quotes, the brothers Gallagher are certainly still good for a chuckle.

And so, dear friends, on this fine Thursday morning, I give you, Mr. Noel Gallagher:

"Sure I love Liam - but not as much as I love pot noodles."

Quote of the Day: #1

ack in college, I went through this phase where I was really, really into quotes. I would pore through books and magazines and surf the 'net for hours upon hours, simply looking for witty or meaningful quotes which I would compile into various notebooks for future reference.

Having recently moved into a (much) smaller apartment than the one I first lived in when I first came down to Richmond, I have found it necessary to shed much of the stuff that used to inhabit the cavernous spaces of my old loft, so as to not overwhelm my cozy Museum District pad (and to attempt to pare down the amount of shit I've been stockpiling). Last night, while pawing through a drawer, I happened across a couple of my old quote notebooks. I felt comfortable getting rid of them, but decided that some of those quotes were too good to simply forget about. And so, friends, enter Quote of the Day.

It might not happen everyday. But hence, I'm gonna share some of the better quotes that I found over the years of quote-collecting, especially since most of them ended up involving musicians (or Oscar Wilde, but let's face it, he was pretty rock&roll).

And so, drumroll please. The first quote in this new series comes to us courtesy of one of rockdom's greatest axemen, a man who casts a mighty big shadow on all guitar players who come after him. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Pete Townshend:

"I smash guitars because I like them."
