From The Library: Bit of a Blur by Alex James

As I've no doubt mentioned here plenty of times, one of my fondest rock&roll memories involves Mister Alex James, bassist for that beloved bastion of Britpop, Blur. It was a crowded, sweaty night at the old Black Cat, and Blur was putting on one heck of a show. It was the height of the glory days of Britpop, and all the scenester kids were there. But what I will always remember above all else was Alex, glorious indifference coursing through his lanky body, head cocked to the side and trademark ciggie dangling from his slightly sneering lips. It was beautiful. Years later I would hear a rumor that James had spent over a million pounds on champagne over the years, a nod of sorts to the excesses brought on by worldwide success (and the desire to become an "alcoholic genius"). And naturally, who better to write an autobiography than a man who has a millionaire liver?

Bit of a Blur was even better than I could have hoped. Over the course of two days I only put it down to go to work and go to sleep (and fell asleep while reading). James proves a charming, captivating host, clever as you like and engaging as can be. His words are light, but earnest. I immediately was struck at how perfect it was to have such an enthusiastic musician write such an enthusiastic tribute to life as a rock star. In a sense, James is like a kid on Christmas morning while writing about his life with Blur, and it's endearing beyond belief.

Events happen chronologically, and most of the book is, as you would expect, devoted to the Blur years. Along the way you'll pick up many an unexpected nugget of James trivia (unless of course you're a total superfan, in which case you'll already know everything) such as where he met ace Blur axeman Graham Coxon, his most debaucherous, excessively scandalous evening (hint: it involves five ladies and some champers), and the fact that James has been known to fly a plane every now and again. That whole messy feud with Oasis? James barely acknowledges it, glossing over it with a scant mention hither and thither, which for some reason makes me like him even more. Prone to moments of insightful reflection, don't be surprised to come across a thought-provoking sentiment or two, though of course one is always sure that James has his tongue planted firmly in his cheek.

James is a terribly good spinner of yarns, and gives his recollections with a carefree panache. Even while describing the darker side of success, he remains always likeable, always the hero. Bit of a Blur is, without question, one of the best things I've read in quite a long time. There is so much good to be had within the pages of this book, I can't recommend it enough.

The Greatest Beard-a-Thon Mix You Will Ever Hear

So i don't really go into hockey here at LET, but never let it be said i am anything less than a 100%, 3/4 American, 1/4 Canuck Puck Head of the highest degree. i started playing street hockey when i was in grade school, broke my leg playing ice about two years ago and was playing in two adult rec leagues when my artery exploded. Being a Chicago native, i'm a huge Blackhawks fan, and even went to the outdoor game at Wrigley Field a couple of years back. Having lived in DC for the past decade-plus, i've become equally passionate about the Caps. Hell, i've had some kind of season ticket package since well before the Great 8, so you can only imagine the sheer joy i'm experiencing right now, just before either team starts down the path towards glory. i have not decided if a 'Hawks/Caps series for the Cup would be the greatest or worst thing i could imagine, but i'll tell you this--if either makes it that far, i will be at at least one game for either of my teams.

For the second year in a row, i've opted to join the Beard-a-Thon, which raises money to help keep kids with razor sharp blades and deadly sticks off the street and on the ice where they belong. i don't ask anyone to donate to LET because, quite frankly, my day job treats me pretty nicely, but if you've ever thought, "Man, Terrible Chris is constantly giving and giving, what ever could lowly I ever do for lordly him?"

Throw a few ducats towards the cause, and we'll call it even. Hell, if enough of you donate a buck, maybe i'll even place in the top ten. Or better, you cheap bastards whom i love dearly.

Here's the link not-so-subtly-hidden-like-above:

Now, i had to start from scratch, and i'll be the first to admit i'm currently a light bulb in my mouth away from looking like Uncle Fester, but it's hardly a grow-a-thon if i started with my usual thickness.

To get you in the mood, here comes The Greatest Beard-a-Thon Mix You Will Ever Hear.

Newsflash: Blur Reforms for Summer 09 Gig!

Holy flashback, Batman!

The year is 1997. My favorite three bands are the Verve, Oasis, and Blur. Blur at the old Black Cat was actually my first club show in DC, back when I was but a wee teen. Oasis at the Patriot Center in Fairfax was my first ever gig, at age 16. And the Verve, well, that show in Atlanta in late 1997 was the first time I saw God at a gig.

Fast forward to the year now, and my former favorite trio have all been in the news. First, the Verve gets back together (hallelujah) and plays Coachella (hallelujah), and releases a new album, their first since Urban Hymns a decade ago. Then, Oasis tries their hand at another record, which makes it into several big deal End of Year lists.

And now? Now Blur's getting back into the game.

Damon, Graham, Alex, and Dave are throwing their hat back into the ring, and are reforming to do a July 3, 2009 gig in Hyde Park (London). No word as to whether this reunion is to be a one-off, but given the success of their contemporaries' comebacks, I have to say they'd be silly not to milk their reformation.

London's pretty lovely in the early summer, perhaps I'll be heading over to catch their first gig as the original foursome since 2000...

In the meantime, here's a little vintage Blur for all my fellow Britpoppers out there. "Beetlebum", though later in Blur's catalog, has always been one of my all-time faves.
