Terrible Chris' Fave Albums of 2010, Part the 2nd

i know, i know, you were so blown away by yesterday's list, you're wondering if you can take anymore. All the money i spend up in this bitch, you best believe you are.

6. Alex B, Moments--i dig Alex B's sound in a BIG way. Possibly my favorite beat album of the year.

7. Teebs, Ardour--Or maybe this one. Both were damn fine beat records. 'Nuff said.

8. Grinderman, Grinderman II--i've said it before, and i'll say it again--i can only hope and pray that my mid-life crisis sounds 1/100th this kick ass. This, my friends, is gutter rock blues at its finest.

9. Big Boi, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty--The until-now-less-heard-from-half of Outkast proves his worth and then some on perhaps the best rap CD of 2010.

10. Erykah Badu, New Amerykah, Part Two (Return of the Ankh)--Ms. Badu continues her perfection of odd funk and R&B.

Artist Profile: Lil' Wayne

Apropos of nothing beyond me having watched VH1's Behind the Music on Lil' Weezy last night, here's a sampler of Lil' Wayne tracks for your Saturday enjoyment. For a cat that doesn't write down any of his rhymes, he's surprisingly spry on the mic. i think my favorite part of the show, however, was his explaining about the two bullet fragments still in his chest following an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 12. i'm paraphrasing here, but he used words to the effect of "I've still got two pieces of metal in my chest, too close to my heart for the doctor's to remove. It's cool, though, they ain't moving around or nothing. I mean, unless I get caught in an electro-magnetic field or something."

Indeed, sir. Indeed.

The Greatest Mostly Jingoistic U.S. Mix You Ever Will Hear

Since i may or may not be either hosting or attending a BBQ tomorrow, i'm dropping The Greatest Mostly Jingoistic U.S. Mix You Ever Will Hear today. i'm not a huge flag waver, but i do love making mixes, so i guess Uncle Sam's semi-loyal are the winners here. Or, if you're not from here and/or harbor reasonable, less than complimentary feelings in our direction, play this at your "ironic" Americans are Wankers party. See how music can bring us all together in a non-violent, in this case condescending way like that?

A Terrible Concert Update

While Megan clearly has been the concert lead for LET this year, tonight starts a pretty decent run of shows for me, and since i don't have anything else prepared for today, you get to check out what i have deemed worthy of my attendance. As always, if you see the lumpy, bald guy with the red beard in the corner, and you mention this ad, you'll get 50 PERCENT OFF your next order!!! Now all i have to do is start an import/export business, and we're styling.
May 4, 9:30 Club, Sia

(That's tonight, suckas, so be there or don't. Your call, really)

(Don't have tix to this one yet, but i always kick myself when i miss him playing 'round these parts, so this time, i'm going. Damn it.)

UPDATE: This one is sold out, so unless i get off my ass and pull the old "let the blogger in" card, i guess i'm going to have to wait AGAIN to see Dan. Damn it two times.

May 21, Sully's in Chantilly, 3rd Rail

(A friend of mine's band. She keeps promising me an mp3 for the site, but i'm going to break my own rule just for her and mention the show SANS music for all ya'll to enjoy.)

May 29, DAR Constitution Hall, Erykah Badu

(Not my favorite venue, but this is what we do for Badu)

(The latest iteration of the remaining boys from Morphine. Saw them at the Mark Sandman Tribute Concert, if memory serves, and they were money)

(In case you needed to find me when you can't locate me at the Hole show, C.I.T.)

mp3: Bacon (Jim Gaffigan from King Baby)

(May the Nerd be with You)

(See the above note re: Ms. Badu, but come up with something that rhymes with "Keys" in the second verse)

Undoubtedly, there will be some more, and i'll do a write-up on each one after the fact. If there's somebody kick ass coming we truly should not miss, feel free to plug your band in the comment section.

Odds and Ends FREE-FOR-ALL!!!

i've got a couple of things that need writing, including a few Old Skool Reviews i'm looking forward to, but i also realized ye olde inbox is getting a tad full these days and figured now was as good a time as any to do some spring cleaning and bring the music to the masses. As for explanatory notes regarding said tardiness, sue me. Too many pretty people walking around in lesser states of dress than they had on a scant weeks ago. What's a Terrible to do?

In no particular order of anything...

NEW RELEASES

Have you heard the new Eryka Badu joint yet? Good Lord and Butter, that's some groovey listening for your earholes right there. i know i mentioned it a while back when she started dropping singles for New Ameryka Part II, but i had no idea it was going to be this good. Let me be the first to call it, "Turn Me Away (Get Munny)" is going to be the summer block party BBQ after hours jam, ladies and gents. Twinkle, twinkle, baby, this one is a star.

Yes, i lurvs me some Flying Lotus, and, of course, i'm a sucka for Dilla, but i have to say, i'm pretty sure my favorite DJ/producer these days is Alex B. Once i heard his amazing Brainfeeder podcast, i was pretty much hooked for life. i just picked up his brand new Moments earlier today, and the tracks i've heard so far are too nice. Money, even. i want to be able to do what this man does with digital manipulation. The electronic kind, you dirty bastards, not the other kind.

Ed's note: i'm already quite proficient at that other kind thank you very much.

mp3: You and I Both Know (Alex B from Moments)

SPEAKING OF BEAT PRODUCERS...

If you follow the beat scene, you've probably already heard there's another J Dilla piece in the works. Coming out May 10, The Donut Shop will contain "the official J Dilla serato with 6 Dilla tracks b/w Serato Control Tone, 2 slipmats & badass package." As i took my first private DJ session this past weekend, i now actually know what all those things mean. To whet your 'tites, Stones Throw has thrown this stoned out classic.

mp3: Safety Dance (J Dilla from The Donut Shop)

Since 15 minutes elapsed since his last one, Madlib came out with the latest in his ongoing Beat Konducta series, this time focusing on Africa. Surprising absolutely no one, it's three nice.

Did you just blink? Yep, in that time, Madlib finished another one. Look for the long-awaited OJ Simpson to hit shelves May 18.

mp3: Cali Hills (Guilty Simpson + Madlib from OJ Simpson)

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THOSE FREE MUSIC FRIDAYS?

Didn't i just get through saying i've been ogling scantily clad females lately? Listen, people. Or read, at least. You're right, though, i do have a bit of a backlog of tracks to work through the pipes, as it were.

Every time i think i've found the band name of the year, a new one comes along and starts the debate anew. This time up, it's Trampled by Turtles. Seriously, it's beauty in its simplicity, yet evocative of Buddhist koan universality in its descriptiveness. The fact that they play "punk-bluegrass" only makes it that much sweeter. If the Devil actually did go down to Georgia while he was doing Tony Montana-sized mountains of coke, he might sound a little like this. Find out the rest for yourselves when the new LP drops on April 13.

mp3: Wait So Long (Trampled by Turtles from Palomino)

As next in line to run the Fambly business, i get and dig nepotism. At the same time, i also understand the hassles of trying to get out from underneath the shadow of one's progenitor in such situations. If you're in a similar place, take that and multiple it by 1000 and you probably would feel a little like Paul Simon's kid, Harper. (Un)fortunately, Harper sounds quite a bit like Pop, so if that's the sound for you, try this one on for size.

mp3: Wishes and Stars (Harper Simon from Harper Simon)

Ever wondered what it would sound like if Shooter Jennings partnered with Stephen King to make borderline industrial electro prog rock? Me neither, but now that the idea is in your head, here's a bit of that. And it ain't too shabby, truth be told. Somebody had to carry the NIN torch forward, right? This here is a "concept" album, children, wherein Stevie is the voice of a radio DJ playing his last gig before the government takes over the airwaves, all while Shooter is rawking out like he's taking it personally. Or something like that.

mp3: Don't Feed the Animals (Shooter Jennings & Hierophant from Black Ribbons)

In a bid for "Most Fucked Up Album Cover of the Year," the group Drink Up Buttercup are here with Born and Thrown on a Hook. Is that a woman holding a gun and a smoke in a blood spattered car? Hell, now you kind of feel like you HAVE to listen to their first single, right? It's a bit of Beatles-inspired brit pop, so it's got that going for it, too.

mp3: Young Ladies (Drink Up Buttercup from Born and Thrown on a Hook)

And finally, beloved label Arts & Crafts graced us with the latest from LET fave The Most Serene Republic. Keep an ear out for a sample of Jon Brion from Eternal Sunshine For The Spotless Mind, if you're into that kind of thing. Interestingly enough, their PR folks tell me the track is called "Photocall," while the download clearly is labelled "Longevity Please." As i'm in PR myself and realize those fools hardly ever know what they're talking about, let's go with the latter.

mp3: Longevity Please (The Most Serene Republic from their Website)

HEARD ANY GOOD RANDOMLY SUBMITTED MUSIC LATELY?

As luck would have it, i have.

By this point in our lives, i think we can all agree that some of the best things in all the world, really, come out of Chicago. Personally, i have my own theories involving Michigan waters, a sub-Arctic necessity for cuddling and the proximity to Canadians, but whether you buy into that or not, i'm confident saying you'll dig the Windy City's latest offering, one Mr. Danny Chaimson and his band, the Eleventh Hour. The boys manage to sound like an amalgam of Dr. John, Billy Joel and the Stax house band. They didn't say so to me directly or anything, but it sounds to me like they're on a mission from God.

mp3: Sittin' By the Bayou (Danny Chaimson and the Eleventh Hour from Young Blood, Old Soul)

mp3: Bobblehead Girl (Danny Chaimson and the Eleventh Hour from Young Blood, Old Soul)

DUDE, WTF WITH ALL THE SHOUTING?

Chill, sucka. i'm done now. Kill a guy for being a bit hard of hearing, for Chrissakes.

From the Ladies

We've been getting so many submissions recently, i've been trying to divvy them up into digestable, bite-sized pieces for you ravenous mp3 gluttons. Today, dear friends, we shall be focusing on...The Ladies.

Aw yeah, that's right, little momma, The Ladies. Sugar, spice and everything nice, indeed.

Allow me to first introduce one Miss Geo. Hailing from Rhode Island, she describes her music as "a mix of indie pop, new wave, and electro." To my ears, there's an unmistakable trace of Juliana Hatfield, a la In Exile Deo (though she hopefully eats better), as well as slight shades of the Smashing Pumpkins. Don't think of her as a grunge throwback rip-off, though, as she does an admirable job of creating a sound all her own.

mp3: Hooked (Miss Geo from The Story)

mp3: Broken Wrists (Miss Geo from The Story)

Then there's Melissa Bel. The 20-year-old seems to fit nicely in that space generally occupied by the likes of John Mayer. Fortunately, she's got the underlying white girl funk power you hear in voices like Joss Stone's to back her up. Nothing like a little soul to kick your act up a notch.

And as our superstar of the day, the one, the only Funk Mistress herself, Erykah Badu. Have you caught all the goodies she's been putting out there lately? Followers of her Twitter feed already have their copy of "Jump Up in the Air (Stay There)" with Lil' Wayne, an Internet exclusive, as it were. Shortly thereafter, she dropped "Window Seat" from the upcoming New Amerykah pt.2: Return of the Ankh. Release date information is sketchy, but March 30 is the "maybe" date given. If it's half as funkalicious as Part One, this mother funker will tear the roof off. Hell, if it's half as funkticious as the first video from the CD, it's going to bring it on home.

Free Mixtape Love: Late Night with the Roots

I'm kind of surprised that the Powers That Be at GE haven't already done this, but DJ Heat has put together a mixtape made up entirely of live tracks of the Roots playing with some of hip-hop's biggest names, all from their gig on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. We're talking everyone from old skoolers like Q-Tip and Public Enemy to newer jacks like Wale (not to mention Mos Def, 50 Cent and damn near the entire Wu-Tang Clan). The only real "problem" with the Late Night with the Roots mixtape really is the same problem that most live TV performances have--the sound is so/so and doesn't seem to capture the full energy of the gig. Now, with that being said, the Roots prove admirably that they're possibly one of the only bands out there that could do justice to the job. For the most part, rap sounds like shit live, particularly if the MC doesn't have a real, live backing band. The Roots, however, are able to create live what most DJs/producers would give their left nut for to recreate on wax. Quite simply, they have a musician's knack for creating hip hop with instruments, and, hot damn, they do it well.

Some of the tracks here simply are of better quality than others. It's a shame, for example, that the Beastie Boys track has a few glitches. As it appears the songs were recorded directly from the TV (as opposed to sound board quality), it's hard to where the imperfections originated, but it's a bummer no matter whose fault it is. Of perhaps little to no surprise, the best tracks here are from groups that are used to working with live bands. The Blakroc track, in my opinion, is heads and shoulders above everything else here.

While I don't watch Fallon's show (or any other talk show, for that matter), there's still one glaring omission for my money here. The Day Wacko Jacko OD'd off to Neverland, the Roots cut some cover tracks with Erykah Badu while she was there in studio. The quality of those tracks is infinitely superior, and, more importantly, they show the band having more "fun."

Bottom line, this definitely is worth checking out, though you might end up culling some or most of the tracks from your mp3 library after you've sampled them. If you really want to hear the Roots "live on wax," look no further than "The Roots Come Alive," possibly the greatest live in concert rap CD of all times. If you want to hear the Roots play with some of the biggest guns in the game today, though, this one is for you.

Mixtape Love: The RE:Union by Reflection Eternal

By this point in the game, i think we pretty much all expect that come Christmas time, our favorite bands and artists are going to deluge the Interwebs with all sorts of holiday-time free mp3 love. But New Year's love? Not so much. So let's grant a marketing coup to those geniuses in Reflection Eternal, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek, for giving us the first goodies of this still very new year.

In anticipation of their forthcoming sophomore release due in March 2010, Revolutions Per Minute, the duo dropped The RE:Union mixtape scant days ago for all the good little indie boys and girls and hip-hop heads to enjoy. Compiled by Statik Selektah, the mixtape features some new goodies from the upcoming CD, old faves from debut Train of Thought, and a number of guest spots. Playing along we have Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Common, (vastly overrated) Jay Z, and Kool G. Rap, amongst others. (slight aside: whatever happened to DJ Polo? It does not pay to be an old skool DJ, i tell you what.) What i particularly like is their use of some classic beats for new rhymes (Is that a little of Run-DMC's "Sucka MCs" laid down on "Wishing on a Black Star?" Yes. Yes, it is.)

So while you're nursing the end of that NYE hangover and wondering what have we done for you lately, now you have an answer. We've been busy finding the finest free mp3s for our ever loving jackals.
So what, you ask? Sew buttons, i reply.
